State teachers stage demo in Delhi against SC ruling

Shillong, Nov 25: Over 1,000 primary school teachers of Meghalaya have staged a dharna in New Delhi along with their compatriots from other states to oppose a Supreme Court order that mandated them to clear Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) within two years.

Around 50,000 primary school teachers from across the country took part in the demonstration organised by the All India Primary Teacher’s Federation (AIPTF) at Jantar Mantar on Monday.

The AIPTF has been protesting against the Supreme Court order issued on September 1, 2025 that made TET mandatory for all non-TET qualified primary school teachers to stay in the job.

The Meghalaya delegation from Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo regions under All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers Association (AMPSTA) and its affiliate APSTA was led by AMPSTA general secretary FC Shullai and president Dipak Marak.

They stressed that the two-year TET deadline is impractical and places undue pressure on thousands of teachers who have long served the education sector.

“We, Meghalaya’s teachers, stand united. We extend our full support to the AIPTF in its fight against this directive (for safeguarding teachers’ livelihoods),” Shullai said.
