Substations to address power shortage in rural areas: Mondal

Shillong, July 9: The state government, in a bid to resolve the issue of power shortage in rural areas, has proposed to set up power substations in a phased manner.

A significant number of rural substations will be set up to address the power shortage issue, said power minister AT Mondal on Tuesday.

Quoting chief minister Conrad K Sangma, he said 5-10 rural substations will be set up every year on a strategic basis.

Reacting to a query on power shortage in Sohra, he cited the need for system upgradation and establishment of more substations in rural areas.

The objective of substations is to reduce length of transmission lines, minimising disruptions and ensuring that any issues affect only local areas, he added.

Mondal also clarified that tariff decisions are made by MeECL or its utilities, with the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) playing key roles in the process.

He, however, refrained from commenting on how Meghalaya’s power tariffs compare with other states, citing a lack of representation from those states.
