Tourists asked to wear life jacket while boating

11 precautionary measures in advisory issued for tourist spots

Shillong May 2: The boat tragedy claiming nine lives at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh has prompted authorities across the country to take precautionary measures, especially in water-related activities at tourist facilities.

In a detailed safety advisory, East Khasi Hills district administration has directed stakeholders at all tourist spots in the district to implement 11 precautionary measures to ensure visitors’ safety.

Display of a map of the tourist spot, also properly indicating entry and exit routes, is among the key directives.

Ordering mandatory capacity building for on-ground personnel, the advisory said, “Tourist guides/ persons who are working in tourist spots should be trained in basic life-saving skills.”

To address infrastructure risks, the district administration has ordered periodic checks.

“Safety audit of structures installed at the tourist spot like railings/ bridges/ kid’s playground equipment, etc., should be regularly conducted. In case of damaged, same to be rectified immediately,” the deputy commissioner stated in the advisory.

With several tourist spots offering water-based activities, the DC listed multiple safety protocols.

“In tourist spots with boating facility, the boats, safety equipment and engines should be visually inspected before each use. Boats should not be overloaded. Wear life jackets during boating,” the advisory said.

“Ensure regular servicing of boat engines,” it added.

On boat operations, it specified, “Only experienced boat handlers should be allowed to hire the boat. The owners shall ensure that people who hired the boat have adequate boat handling experience, are familiar with the operation of the skill cord and will wear flotation devices/ life jackets.”

For swimming areas, the advisory said, “Tourist spots which allow swimming should have a life guard.”

The advisory also directed regular monitoring of weather conditions.

“Check regular weather forecast from India Meteorological Department website,” it said.

For emergency response, the DC instructed, “Keep First Aid Box, Fire Extinguishers and Emergency Lights.”
