Tura, June 5: In a collective effort to raise awareness about urgent environmental issues and promote actionable solutions, government bodies, social and student organizations, and individuals across the state came together to celebrate World Environment Day today, embarking on tree plantation drives and awareness programmes.

Multiple environmental awareness programmes are taking place across the five districts of Garo Hills, including Tura, with school children and NGOs joining hands with government agencies helping with tree plantation drives.
In Tura, the Tura Hindu Samshan Bhumi Committee (THSBC) organized a plantation programme at Mokshadham, with senior citizens, women, and community leaders actively taking part.
The programme took off with a ceremonial planting of a sapling by former MLA Mukul Das, and over a hundred saplings, provided by Meghalaya Basin Development Agency were planted, including Ashoka, mango, jackfruit, and other indigenous species. The saplings were provided by MBDA.
In North Garo Hills, awareness on the importance of environmental protection and beating plastic pollution were organised in various areas of the district, including Resubelpara town.
Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini, along with officers and staff of the district administration planted tree saplings in the premises of the DC office. The event was followed by a cleaning drive in the premises that saw active participation by officers and employees, including the deputy commissioner.
Schools across the district also organised similar plantation drives in their respective schools surroundings, while village communities voluntarily joined the event by organising roadside plantation of trees across the district.

The call for safeguarding the environment was bolstered by the message of reducing plastic use which causes major problems in waste management.
