Shillong, June 15: In a significant move aimed at clearing the rising problem of traffic congestion in the urban areas of Tura town, the central government has approved Rs 951.27 Crore for the construction of a new 29.03 kilometre Tura by-pass that will reduce congestion in the bustling urban areas of Tura town and help improve road safety.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari made the announcement on social media, stating that the bypass will connect NH-127B to NH-217 and will be built to a 2-lane standard with paved shoulders. The project holds strategic significance as NH-217, earlier known as NH-51, is a key route connecting Guwahati to Dalu on the India-Bangladesh border, where an inland customs check-post is located.

The union minister said that this crucial bypass will start from near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is intended to bypass the congested core of Tura town, where the current road alignment is narrow and overcrowded.
Once completed, the new route will divert through traffic away from the main town, easing pressure on local roads and enhancing travel safety and efficiency in the region.
