Tura, May 31: A village headman was fatally attacked by an elephant in the Gasuapara region of South Garo Hills on Saturday morning.

The victim, Ethinat G Momin of Kondok village, near Gasuapara border town, was travelling to fetch his daughter from a school hostel. Around 8:30 AM, while riding his motorcycle on NH-61, he encountered an elephant on the road that attacked him, resulting in his death.

The victim’s family is demanding compensation of fifty lakh rupees or government employment for his wife.

Locals from the area say they have been seeking the establishment of a wildlife beat office or camp in the area in view of frequent elephant movements, once again highlighting human-wildlife conflicts that continue to plague the region.
