Ri Bhoi, Dec 6: ICAR- KVK Ri Bhoi, ICAR (RC) for NEH Region, Umiam hosted the World Soil Day 2024-cum-Soil Health Camp on December 5 where 75 farmers and officials from ICAR-KVK Ri Bhoi, ICAR (RC) for NEHR, Umiam participated in the programme.
With the theme ‘Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage’ held at Kyrdem Village in Ri Bhoi, the event aim to create awareness and enhance the knowledge on soil health management, benefits of soil health cards, management of problematic soil and control of soil degradation for sustainability of soil and enhancement of crop productivity.
Dr. Moloy Sarmah Baruah, SMS (Animal Sc) spoke on the importance of animal components for reclamation of soil health while Dr Popiha Bordoloi, SMS (Soil Science), ICAR-KVK Ri Bhoi expressed gratitude to the farmers for taking interest on the programme.
Dr Bordoloi presented her lecture on the topic “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage for Income Generation and Sustainable Environment” and elaborated on soil health management, soil testing, soil health cards, application of lime for soil acidity management, and incorporation of leguminous crops in the cropping system which are linked to crop productivity and soil sustainability.
Topics such as role of natural farming in soil health management, role of women farmers for conservation of natural resources and a demonstration on the process of soil sample collection from the crop field were all part of the programme.
Farmers-scientist interaction session was also held and the farmers were given out soil health cards and agri- inputs like pea seeds, rajma seeds, lime and neem cakes.
