‘92% of state’s population covered under MHIS’

Williamnagar, March 3: An Urban Health and Wellness Centre was inaugurated at Williamnagar, marking a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in East Garo Hills.

Addressing the gathering, Cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak said the establishment of the centre at Ampangdamgre locality was the result of coordinated efforts between the state and central governments to strengthen healthcare services for urban residents.

He informed that the Meghalaya government has allocated Rs 2,472 crore to the health sector in the 2026–27 budget, underscoring its commitment to improving medical infrastructure and services across the state.

The minister further stated that 92 per cent of the state’s population has already been covered under the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS), significantly reducing the financial burden of medical treatment on families. Emphasising the importance of the new facility, he sought continued public cooperation to ensure sustained infrastructural development in the region.

In her keynote address, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr Cruzie Elmina N Sangma said the centre will provide comprehensive healthcare services with a focus on holistic care and wellness.

She informed that one doctor, along with supporting staff, has been appointed at the facility, and a total of 12 services will be made available to cater to the healthcare needs of the people.

Deputy Commissioner RP Marak highlighted the district’s performance in the health sector and said challenges related to healthcare delivery are being addressed by dedicated medical officials. He also appreciated the efforts of health workers in extending essential services to the public.

Speaking on behalf of the locality, Salgra Ch Sangma expressed gratitude to the Government of Meghalaya and local MLA Marcuise N Marak for bringing the Urban Health and Wellness Centre and other infrastructural developments to Ampangdamgre.

East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police SA Rynjah also attended the programme.
