Don’t get brainwashed with misinformation: Conrad

CM campaigns for Nongstoin candidate Dressar Marngar

Shillong, Feb 11: NPP chief and chief minister Conrad K Sangma has urged the voters of upcoming district council elections not to be “brainwashed” with misinformation spread by the opposition.

Campaigning for the party candidate Dressar Marngar for Nongstoin constituency under Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), he sought a mandate for the ruling party.

“There will be a lot of heat during the elections, but after they are over, people will again talk about development, livelihoods, and the support they need,” he said.

Pointing out that the NPP holds a clear majority in state assembly, he said, “It is only the NPP that can provide the necessary support and bring the development we deserve. Therefore, it is imperative that we vote for the government that can deliver on development.”

Highlighting the NPP’s commitment to ensuring welfare measures for the people, he said, “Many will make claims and promises in politics, but we are here to serve the people and bring development.”

“Why should we pay attention to baseless allegations when, after elections, those who make them will disappear along with their promises,” he said.

Emphasising the government’s fight in lifting the ban on coal mining, the NPP chief said it was the NPP that challenged the ban and successfully obtained approval for scientific mining in the state.

He informed about the Coal Ministry officials carrying out inspections in mines in Jaintia Hills and that they would soon visit mines in West Khasi Hills as well.

“We have overcome one of the biggest challenges, and we hope it will bring positive change,” he said.

Assuring traditional miners of smoother approval process for them, he said, “Miners of sand and other small quarries, spanning less than 10,000 square feet, have urged for exemption from stringent regulation. As a government, we have approached Centre for exemptions from stringent rules and regulations for small miners. We aim to ensure that the traditional miners will not have to face these challenges”.

He also highlighted the government’s initiatives for the development of sports, education, and infrastructure across the state.

Referring to the construction of a football stadium and a track-and-field stadium in Nongstoin, he said they are testament to the NPP’s commitment to the people.

During the programme, NPP chief also heard the concerns of the public, who had converged to attend the election meeting.
