Shillong, Feb 14: The National People’s Party (NPP) has declared its commitment to enact more effective laws for protection of the indigenous community.
Addressing at an election campaign for garnering support for sitting MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang on Friday, Tynsong said that the NPP is committed to look into the issues and the welfare of the indigenous community.
“We will continue to bring effective laws for the protecting the interest and welfare of the people by working closely with the traditional institutions,” said NPP state president and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong during a campaign rally for autonomous district council (ADC) elections scheduled for February 21.
He also expressed gratitude to the people of Khasi and Jaintia regions for their mandate to NPP enabling the party lead both KHADC and JHADC.
Campaigning for sitting Mairang MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang on Friday, he mentioned that the KHADC had organised a programme where the governor had distributed certificates to clan elders to show that they are empowered as per law passed by the Council.

He also termed a blessing for indigenous people the legal recognition to village women and youth organisations and the Lineage Act.
Urging the people of Mairang to vote for the sitting MDC, he mentioned about NPP’s effort to fulfill long-pending aspirations of the people by creating the new Eastern West Khasi Hills district.
Seeking challenge “Garo party” tag on NPP, he said, “Who is Prestone then? I am the state president of the party.”
Tynsong also pointed out that NPP was formed by Meghalaya’s tallest leader Purno A Sangma, who was the former Lok Sabha Speaker from the region.
Talking about NPP’s wide reach, he said, “A leader from Uttarakhand has expressed the need to form NPP chapter in his state for protection of tribal minorities.”
On the state’s sporting achievements during NPP-led government, he said, “We had organised the Meghalaya Games in which 3,800 youth participated. The winners, who got to complete in National Games, bagged three medals for the state. It will be an honour for the state to host 39th National Games in 2027 in which 25,000 will attend.”
