Shillong, May 29: Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh, who is also the chairman of the Regional Committee for West Khasi Hills, has alleged that the Assam counterpart has been apathetic to conducting any joint visit to Langpih sector, probably in apprehension of election setback.

Although the report of the regional committee led by him is ready for submission to the state government, the required joint visit by regional committees of both the states to Langpih is still pending, Lyngdoh told reporters on Thursday.

“…the response from the Assam counterpart has not been forthcoming, probably because of the fact that they had panchayat elections and the upcoming assembly elections,” Lyngdoh said.

Referring to the 2026 Assam assembly elections, he said, “With elections at the doorstep, it is very likely that they do not want to risk any major decision that might tilt the electorate against the current dispensation.”

Reiterating that the regional committee’s report is ready, Lyngdoh said, “It is just the field visit to Langpih, which we had agreed when we last met at Hotel Pinewood, that has not materialised because of the factors that I have cited.”

“Talks are about to resume but nothing large-scale or spectacular will happen before the end of the electioneering process,” he informed.
