Shillong, Feb 4: A media delegation from Karnataka visited the Umden Diwon Silk Village in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district, known for its traditional Eri Silk production.
The village, which has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its unique silk, showcased its environmentally sustainable and ethically produced textiles to the delegation.

“We gained insights into the entire silk production process, from silkworm rearing to handloom weaving,” said the delegation, appreciating the artisans’ dedication.
The visit highlighted the role of women-led Self Help Groups in preserving traditional weaving techniques and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier praised Meghalaya’s Eri Silk production, led by women, as a model of sustainability and cultural preservation.
Meanwhile, the media delegation also visited the Directorate General Assam Rifles (DGAR) at Laitkor, Meghalaya, as part of the Press Tour to Meghalaya organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India.
The delegation was briefed on the Assam Rifles’ rich history, operational significance, and crucial role in maintaining peace and security in the North Eastern region.

“The force has made noteworthy contributions to peacekeeping, security, and humanitarian assistance in United Nations peacekeeping missions,” said officials, highlighting the Assam Rifles’ participation in international combat environments and overseas deployments.
The journalists were also informed about the growing role of women in the Assam Rifles, who were first inducted as riflewomen in 2015.
“Women riflemen are actively participating in operational duties, border guarding, intelligence operations, civic action programmes, and international peacekeeping assignments,” officials said.
Brigadier Sandip Chatterjee and other senior officials engaged with the media delegation, sharing insights into the force’s operational preparedness, challenges, and people-centric initiatives.
The delegation also visited the Assam Rifles Museum, showcasing the force’s illustrious legacy.
The journalists expressed appreciation for the professionalism and dedication of the Assam Rifles, acknowledging the force’s significant contribution to national security and international peacekeeping efforts.
