JSU demands overhaul of District Selection Committee

Shillong, March 18: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has alleged irregularities in the job recruitment process conducted by District Selection Committee (DSC) and demanded for revision of state-wide DSC rules.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the JSU alleged a “complete collapse of administrative integrity” in West Jaintia Hills while urging the government to take action to plug the loopholes in three months.

Pointing out a “six‑month gap” between the previous and current DSC last year, the JSU said exams during the period were conducted by an “unauthorised body”.

“Through rigorous investigation and a recent meeting with the deputy commissioner, the JSU has uncovered glaring loopholes and a blatant disregard for fair recruitment practices,” it said.

“Advertisements, examinations, and recruitment processes conducted during this period – from April 28 to November 11 last year – were executed by an unauthorised body, exposing a massive lapse in governance,” it said.

The union also objected to reappointed non‑official members, an absentee Member‑Secretary posted at Amlarem, and refusal to publish answer keys.

“The November 2025 notification reappointed the exact same non-official vice-chairman and members from the previous term. The outdated 2014 office memorandum fails to cap the number of terms an individual can serve. This loophole is being exploited to monopolise the committee, stifling fresh perspective and raising serious allegations of political patronage at the cost of meritocracy,” the JSU said.

The Union demanded amending the 2014 SOPs, a mandatory six‑month recruitment window, answer keys within 48 hours, two‑year term caps and a resident Member‑Secretary.

“If these crucial transparency measures are not adopted within this timeframe, the Union will be forced to take severe democratic action to ensure justice is served,” it further warned.
