Creation of sports infrastructure an investment in youth: CM

Improved Playground & Indoor Sports Stadium inaugurated at Umlyngka

Shillong, May 2: Cost incurred in building new sporting facilities is a significant investment that helps create sportspersons for the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said while inaugurating the improved Playground & Indoor Sports Stadium at Umlyngka in Upper Shillong on Saturday.

“I don’t see this as an expenditure but an investment in our youth and for the future of our state,” he said pointing out that disciplined and hard-working sportspersons not only generate true sportsmanship in sports, but in every aspect of their lives.

The Rs 3.5-crore professional facility includes a fully constructed indoor sports hall with a badminton court, dressing rooms, etc.

It will benefit around 3,000 young people of the locality including four schools – Umlyngka Pre-Secondary School, San Shnong Secondary School, Phila Rapsang Secondary School, and Thomas Jones Secondary School.

Mylliem MLA and Deputy Chief Whip RV Lyngdoh and Political Adviser to Chief Minister Hamletson Dohling were also present on the occasion, along with members of the dorbar shnongs and local residents.

Elaborating on the government’s efforts for all-round development, the Chief Minister said the government has in the past few years been trying to bring in development in all sectors in different constituencies and areas.

“As a government we must listen to the concerns of the people and live up to their aspirations and apart from the big infrastructural developments we have believed that investment in our youth and people is the greatest investment,” he said.

He also highlighted various interventions of the government in the sports sector not only for sports infrastructural development but to create a robust enabling environment for sports persons and sports associations to develop and grow.

Congratulating the people especially the youth of the area on the new improved infrastructure he urged the people to take shared ownership and responsibility of the facility to ensure it remains attractive and functional.
