Shillong, May 14: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered conduct of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Meghalaya among 16 states and three Union Territories as part of Phase-III of the nationwide exercise.
As per the schedule, the qualifying date for Meghalaya, along with Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi, has been fixed as October 1, 2026.
The ECI stated that preparation for training and printing will be carried out from June 20 to 29. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house visits from June 30 to July 29.
Rationalization of polling stations is to be completed by July 29. The draft electoral rolls will be published on August 5.
The period for filing claims and objections will run from August 5 to September 9, while the notice phase and disposal of claims will continue till October 3.
The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on October 7.
As of 12 May 2026, Meghalaya has 23,43,252 electors. The state has 3,551 BLOs currently engaged for the exercise. No Booth Level Agents (BLAs) have been appointed so far.
With this order, the SIR will cover the entire country in Phase-III except Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The ECI said the SIR schedule for these three states and UTs will be announced later after considering the completion of Phase-II of the Census and weather conditions in upper reaches and snow-bound areas.
The schedule of SIR Phase-III has been fixed keeping in view the common field machinery with the ongoing house listing of Census, the ECI said.
During SIR Phase-III, over 3.94 lakh BLOs will go house-to-house to cover 36.73 crore electors across the 16 states and three UTs.
They will be assisted by 3.42 lakh BLAs appointed by political parties during the enumeration phase.
The ECI described the SIR as a participative exercise involving all stakeholders including electors, political parties and election officials.
It has requested all political parties to appoint BLAs for each polling booth to ensure full participation and transparency in the process.
In the first two phases of the SIR conducted in 13 states and UTs covering nearly 59 crore electors, over 6.3 lakh BLOs and 9.2 lakh BLAs appointed by political parties were involved in various stages of the revision process.
