Shillong, May 31: Meghalaya is set to launch a Bamboo Design Residency Program that will bring architects, engineers, and designers from across India to work with local communities in developing innovative bamboo-based solutions and products.
The upcoming initiative was finalized during a two-day workshop attended by officials and representatives from the Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission (MSBM), PRIME Meghalaya, MegLife, and SLECO Foundation.
The residency programme aims to invite four professionals from the fields of architecture, engineering, and design to collaborate with bamboo artisans and entrepreneurs in Meghalaya, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design and sustainable innovation.
As part of the workshop, participants undertook field visits across Ri Bhoi district on the first day, visiting Roka Cane & Bamboo Works Agarbatti Industry, PHIBA Bamboo Resort at Blaishiah, and A Maiong Nursery in Umkon. The visits were attended by international bamboo expert Sanjeev Karpe and Mission Director of MSBM, Sachin Gavade, IFS, along with representatives of partner organisations.
The second day focused on discussions around bamboo initiatives across Meghalaya, interactions with bamboo craft entrepreneurs, and detailed planning for the residency programme. The concept presentation was led by Project Lead Minha.
Officials said the initiative is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s bamboo ecosystem by encouraging sustainable design, promoting local entrepreneurship, and creating new opportunities for bamboo-based innovation.
The workshop concluded with closing remarks by Nangteibor Shabong, Assistant General Manager of MSBM, who expressed optimism about the programme’s launch and its potential to position Meghalaya as a hub for contemporary bamboo design and community-led innovation.
