Shillong, July 13: Meghalaya Police have registered a case under the POCSO Act in connection with the alleged molestation of a minor at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), assuring a ‘fair and effective’ investigation into the matter.
Giving an update on police action on the case, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said, “The police have taken up the case under the POCSO Act and are examining the case. A notice has been issued. The written statement will be recorded in court tomorrow, and other steps of investigation will be carried out.”
He added that the case is being treated as a special report case, and the police will file the chargesheet within 60 days depending on the evidence gathered.
The SP said a report will also be sent to NEIGRIHMS authorities for further action against the accused. “It is for them to take a call on what to do with the accused. Nonetheless, the investigation will be fair and effective,” he said.
According to the FIR registered at Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost by the girl’s family, the minor was allegedly touched inappropriately by a male nurse on the hospital premises on July 4.
