Shillong, Aug 23: The East Khasi Hills district administration has denied permission to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to hold a sit-in-demonstration at Barik on August 24, citing fluid law-and-order situation and violation of conditions during its August-19 bike rally.
“…this is to inform that in view of the fluid law and order situation in the city and considering that the conditions laid down in the previous permission granted to your organization for conducting the bike rally on the 19th of August were violated, the permission for sit-in demonstration on 24th August, 2026 is regretted,” deputy commissioner Abhilash Baranwal stated in a letter to KSU assistant general secretary Pynshai Rani on Saturday.
The letter further stated that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed in areas falling under Sadar Sector.
Asked about preparations in case the KSU goes ahead with the protest, Baranwal on Sunday said, “The preparation is similar to what we had on August 21. We are going to make sure, since the Assembly session is also starting and the High Court has a hearing on the same matter, that we are committed to ensure law and order of the city is not disturbed.”
