Zenith Sangma quits Trinamool, rejoins Cong

Shillong, Oct 28: In a significant twist in Meghalaya’s politics, former minister Zenith Sangma, who is the younger brother of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, has resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and rejoined the Indian National Congress (INC).

In his letter to AITC state president Charles Pyngrope on Tuesday, the former Trinamool Congress MLA stated that he had decided to resign from the post of Vice-President of Meghalaya Trinamool Congress and primary membership of the party with immediate effect.

“Today, I feel it is the right moment for me to move on and begin a new chapter – one that aligns more closely with my personal vision and the aspirations I hold for the people I serve,” he said.

The AITC state president has accepted Zenith’s resignation.

Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has approved Zenith’s rejoining, with a letter from AICC in-charge Meghalaya Dr A Chellakumar informing MPCC president Vincent H Pala of the decision.

“This is to inform you that the Congress president has approved the proposal for the rejoining of Zenith Sangma into the Indian National Congress,” Dr Chellakumar said.

Zenith’s return to the Congress is seen as a strategic revival for the party in the Garo Hills region, ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls.
