A new world of dangerous dilemmas: Are you future-proofed?

Dilip Mukerjea

We are living in RapLex Times: Rapid and Complex. Unthinkable disasters are detonating around us. The paradigms of the past have surrendered to the paradoxes of the present. There are no easy answers in a new world of dangerous dilemmas. Yet, the Leaders of the New World will emerge from the wreckage, aware, with shimmering intelligence, that this is also an Age of Powerful Possibilities.

In an age of exponential challenges, the playing field is no longer flat. Those that are stuck in linear approaches to solutions will be left in the dust! We have more information now than we can use, but less knowledge and understanding than we need. Indeed, we seem to collect information because we have the ability to do so, but we are so busy collecting that we haven’t devised a means of connecting! Of using it. Exponentially.

The true measure of any society is not what it knows but what it does with what it knows. It calls for Learning Leadership and Leading Learnership. The winning outcome is self-efficacy: the belief that one can break through barriers, capable of performing in a manner designed to attain stated goals. It is the key to success in life!

THE STORY OF BALMUNG… AND YOUR FUTURE PERHAPS

The concept of jobs is becoming obsolete. There will be work aplenty, but that will require incessant creativity. It is now well known that our counterparts at the end of the 21st century will see today’s struggle over jobs as a fight over deck chairs on the ‘Titanic’. Unless we awaken to fresh possibilities!

You may feel secure in your present situation. But only one thing is certain: the notion of a permanent job is an illusion. In essence, the notion of permanence in any context is an illusion.

Consider the story of Balmung, the magic sword. It belonged to Siegfried, the Germanic hero. Balmung was so sharp that it could slice an armoured warrior in two, from the top of his helmet to the soles of his iron boots. But the cut was so fine that the wounded man could not even feel it. Until he moved. And then he fell into two pieces.

You may feel likewise. But what will you do if this happens to you? Are you prepared? We live in perilous, gyrating times. The possibilities are exciting. New challenges are bringing us to the threshold of our minds. But so are new uncertainties.

L.I.F.E. = Leadership, Innovation, Fellowship, Entrepreneurship

The next-generation leader will have to abandon the command-and-control formula and adopt a connect-and-cooperate approach. This will be impelled by a thinking-learning-and-communicating blueprint.

The need for greater coherence and alignment across multiple geographies and functions will have to be matched by the need for agility, adaptability, robustness, openness, and fast learning. With body, mind, heart, spirit, and soul!
