Action sought on vandalism of Netaji, Vivekananda statues

Shillong, Aug 22: The Shillong Bengalee Students’ Association (SBSA) has condemned the recent violence in Shillong and said that those responsible for attacks on civilians and vandalism of statues of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda must be held accountable.

The SBSA, in a statement, flagged concerns over xenophobia and intimidation of civilians and destruction of property reported in the city.

It said its stand is firm on accountability but equally firm on peace and coexistence, adding that the larger goal must be to ensure communities continue to live with mutual respect and dignity.

Making a direct appeal to the youth, the Association urged them not to get swayed by rumours, provocative content on social media, fringe elements or political opportunism.

The SBSA called upon the youth to pursue justice through constitutional and democratic means and to reject any form of communal retaliation.
