Restoration of peace, citizens’ safety Govt’s priority: CM

Conrad thanks Himanta for support and cooperation

Shillong, Aug 22: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for facilitating the talks between the two states to defuse the ongoing tension and reiterated Meghalaya government’s priority to restore peace and safety of citizens.

He said the meeting between representatives of two governments focused on immediate restoration of normalcy following the unfortunate incidents in Shillong and ensuring safe and unhindered movement of people and vehicles.

The Chief Minister, in a post on X, thanked his Assam counterpart for his cooperation and support and appreciated Assam Minister Atul Bora, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, senior officials and all stakeholders from both states for their constructive engagement.

The meeting was convened in the wake of the August 19 violence during the KSU’s black-flag bike rally in Shillong, which saw attacks on Assam-registered vehicles and triggered suspension of fuel transportation from Assam to Meghalaya.

“Our priority is to restore peace and normalcy at the earliest and ensure the safety of our citizens. At the same time, those responsible for acts of violence and disruption will be identified and dealt with firmly in accordance with law,” Sangma said.

He said both states remain committed to close coordination and to protecting the strong bonds between the people of Assam and Meghalaya.
