Guwahati, May 4: Assam education minister and senior BJP leader Ranoj Pegu on Monday retained the Dhemaji constituency by defeating his nearest rival Sailen Sonowal of the Congress by 32,229 votes, according to the assembly poll results declared by the Election Commission.
Pegu polled 83,649 votes, while Sonowal received 51,420 votes.
The Assam minister, who was in charge of portfolios like education and tribal affairs in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, was first elected to the assembly from Dhemaji in the 2017 bypoll.
He won the seat again in 2021 and became a minister in the second BJP government in the state.
Pegu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the residents of the constituency for electing him once again.
“Your affection, blessings and unwavering faith have inspired me to move forward with renewed zeal and greater responsibility,” he said in a post on X.
Pegu also thanked workers and well-wishers of the BJP and its allies.
“This victory is the win of every citizen of Dhemaji, a victory that carries the promise of fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people while steering the journey of development and progress for the constituency with even greater strength,” he added.
Pegu appealed to all to join hands together and march forward on the path to building a progressive, peaceful and prosperous Dhemaji and Assam. (PTI)
