Forum urges tourists to be respectful to local sentiment

Shillong, Dec 29: Condemnation for the recent incident of chanting “Jai Shri Ram” inside a church at Mawlyngnong by a social media influencer has intensified with more organisations and individuals coming forward to express their resentment against the act of ‘desecration”.

In its reaction to the incident, the Khasi Jaintia Church Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) has called upon the tourists visiting the state to be respectful and sensitive in their explorations and interactions (with the locals).

The Forum also called upon the state government, tourism industry, community and religious leaders to be more stringent with the activities related to tourism and community relationships.

The “senseless” act by the social media influencer ‘Akash Sagar’ has enraged the local communities and Christians at large in the region, said KJCLF secretary Rev Dr EH Kharkongor. 

He also alleged the incident “seems to suggest advancement of an effort to create disharmony, discord and division among ethnic and religious communities…with the intention to promote the majoritarian agenda.”

Naming a few incidents, the Forum also expressed its resentment against similar “recent and ongoing incidents” in the country.
