Conrad Sangma praises Williamnagar hospital after complex 15-kg tumour surgery

Shillong, Sept 14: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday praised the doctors and medical team of Williamnagar Civil Hospital after they successfully removed a massive 15-kg ovarian tumour from a 45-year-old woman in what has been described as the hospital’s first such major and complicated surgery under epidural anaesthesia.

Posting on X, Sangma congratulated the team for carrying out the high-risk procedure.

“Heartiest congratulations to the doctors and medical team at Williamnagar Civil Hospital for successfully performing a first-of-its-kind surgery under epidural anaesthesia, removing a massive 15-kg ovarian tumour from a 45-year-old female patient,” the Chief Minister said.

According to the Meghalaya Health Department, the surgery was particularly challenging as the patient had a pre-existing cardiac condition.

The woman had been suffering from abdominal swelling and pain for more than four years. She underwent surgery on September 8.

Doctors decided to use epidural anaesthesia because of her significant cardiac history and the risks associated with the procedure.

The tumour measured around 46 × 15 × 11 cm and weighed approximately 15 kg.

The operation was led by Dr Vince Momin, Senior Gynaecologist and Lead Surgeon. Anaesthetic management was overseen by Dr Sengrak Marak.

Dr Tanmoy Momin, Medicine Specialist, along with staff nurses Eulin, Eugine and Dinea, and OT Technician Trinchi, also played key roles in the patient’s perioperative, postoperative and ICU care.

The Health Department said the successful surgery reflected the expertise, teamwork and courage of the medical team at Williamnagar Civil Hospital.

It also marked an important milestone for the hospital, demonstrating its ability to handle complex and high-risk procedures locally.

The patient is recovering well and is expected to be discharged on September 15.
