KSU accepts Govt invitation for talks with CM
Shillong, Aug 25: A crucial meeting between the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the government to discuss the KSU’s five-point agenda will be held on Wednesday evening.
The meeting is taking place as KSU on Tuesday accepted the state government’s invitation for talks.
In its official invitation to the KSU, the government stated that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma convened a meeting with the KSU at 6 pm on August 26 in the state secretariat.
Informing about the KSU’s acceptance, the Union’s publicity secretary Pynshai Kupar Dkhar said the Union expects the talks to be fruitful.
However, KSU assistant general secretary Pynshaiborlang Rani said the Union will not dilute its stand when the government has called it for talks.
He warned that the KSU will intensify its agitation if the discussions do not produce a positive outcome.
On Monday, the Chief Minister informed about the government’s communication to KSU, saying, “We have written officially to KSU and asked them to come for discussion… we will discuss all five agendas.”
On demand to release four arrested leaders and revoke MMPO/MPDA, Sangma said law will take its own course.
Meanwhile, the three arrested KSU leaders were brought back from jails in Garo Hills to Shillong district jail on Tuesday.
The arrested leaders are KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar.
Informing about the development, former KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said, “We have come to know that they were brought here this morning and we met them immediately.”
“They have authorized the CEC members who are outside to hold a CEC meeting shortly to take a decision regarding the government’s invitation for talks on the five demands placed by the KSU,” Thabah said.
He further said that all three leaders are in good health.
“All three have been brought here and they are in good health, they are getting the necessary medicines. So these CEC members will now take a decision on how to proceed with regard to the government’s call for talks,” he added.
