Hidden ammunition unearthed in Garo Hills

Tura, Jan 6: Police in South West Garo Hills district today recovered a substantial number of live ammunition suspected to have been left concealed underground by an unidentified militant outfit in the Salmanpara region that borders Bangladesh.

The recovery was made based on information obtained from sources by the police that led them to a bamboo grove near Santogre village, under Salmanpara police station.

During the search by teams from Salmanpara and Ampati police, as many as 55 live rounds of high powered ammunition used in anti-aircraft guns were recovered from the hideout.

The recovered items were seized at the spot in the presence of independent witnesses. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and other related details.

These ammunition are suspected to have been left buried either by the former GNLA outfit or its main collaborator and Assam based ULFA outfit. Once upon a time, the ULFA frequented Bangladesh through the Garo Hills border and was known to have safe houses in villages just across the border. The GNLA was known to work in close tandem with the Assam outfit and during the height of Garo militancy received a large number of arms and ammunition from its ally.
