Meghalaya HC to hear NHAI plea on Oct 6

Shillong, Sept 15: The Meghalaya High Court has agreed to hear on October 6 a plea concerning the National Highways Authority of India’s compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives on road safety, granting the highway authority two weeks’ time to file an additional affidavit.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W Diengdoh passed the order while hearing WP(C) No. 257 of 2026 along with PIL No. 4 of 2024, concerning compliance with directions issued by the Supreme Court in Suo Motu WP(C) No. 5 of 2025.

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner in PIL No. 4 of 2024 sought time on the ground that a copy of the affidavit filed by the Union of India had been served on her only on the day of the hearing.

Similarly, counsel appearing for the NHAI sought additional time to file an affidavit, citing fresh instructions received from the authority.

Allowing the requests, the court directed the NHAI to file its additional affidavit in the Registry within two weeks and furnish advance copies to the counsel for the petitioners and other respondents.

The bench further directed counsel for the Union of India and the NHAI to serve copies of their affidavits on the Additional Advocate General within the week.

It also made it clear that all affidavits must be filed online in addition to physical copies submitted to the Registry.
