Meghalaya to expand STEM bus fleet: Rymbui

Shillong, Jan 12: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday assured concerned parents that the government will be increasing the number of STEM buses in the next few months.

This comes following the Meghalaya Transport Corporation’s (MTC) decision to discontinue school bus services from April 1, 2026.

The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to address traffic congestion and support students, citing the launch of STEM buses two years ago by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

“I am very grateful to the chief minister as two years back he launched these STEM buses which are quite helpful,” Rymbui told reporters.

Responding to a query on MTC’s decision sparking concerns among parents worried about the affordability and reliability of alternative transport options, the minister said, “We have not checked as to why the MTC has stopped. So, until and unless I know the reason, it is very difficult for me to comment on that,” Rymbui said.

Rymbui emphasized the government’s commitment to public service and said, “It is the duty of the government, the government is for the public.”
