Shillong, April 29: The state government and oil marketing companies have allayed apprehensions about shortage of LPG and petroleum products and urged the citizens to refrain from panic buying.
The supply of LPG and all petroleum products, including petrol and diesel, in Meghalaya remains completely normal and under control, informed government officials and company representatives in a press conference on Wednesday.
Supply of LPG and petroleum products in Meghalaya remains stable with adequate stocks and uninterrupted distribution, officials from Oil Marketing Companies and the state government said at a press conference held on Wednesday.
“Adequate stocks are available, and uninterrupted supply is being ensured through robust infrastructure, continuous monitoring systems, and effective coordination between OMCs and the State Government,” they said.
The briefing was addressed by Sashwati Mudoi, State Level Coordinator, Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) Meghalaya; Amarjyoti Bordoloi, Chief General Manager, Indian Oil AOD State Office; and Shai Kupur War, OSD, Food Civil Supplies Department, Government of Meghalaya. It was initiated by PIB Shillong in collaboration with the Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs.
Meghalaya has 334 retail outlets — Indian Oil – 205, Bharat Petroleum – 43, Hindustan Petroleum – 72, private outlets – 14.
“Current stock levels are sufficient to meet approximately 25 days of petrol demand and 46 days of diesel demand,” officials said.
“All retail outlets are functioning normally without any restriction on sales, and consumption patterns remain consistent with normal levels observed during January–March 2026. Citizens have been advised to avoid panic buying,” they said.
In the LPG sector, services reach “approximately 3.7 lakh consumers through a network of 66 distributors across the state.”
“Adequate stock of domestic LPG cylinders is available, and no instances of dry-out have been reported. On average, around 4,103 LPG refills are delivered daily, and the current backlog of about 5 days is being cleared as per scheduled bookings.”
Digital adoption has risen sharply.
The officials highlighted significant progress in digitization, with 83 percent of LPG bookings now being made through digital platforms, compared to 68 percent two months ago.
Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) compliance has also improved to 67 percent from 36 percent two months ago, ensuring transparency and preventing diversion.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, “around 1.7 lakh beneficiaries in the state are being encouraged to complete eKYC to enable seamless digital booking and delivery authentication.”
Distributors are conducting door-to-door campaigns for the same.
“The average daily PMUY refill consumption stood at approximately 1,942 in March 2026.”
To support low-consumption households, migrant labourers, and students, “5 kg LPG cylinders have been reintroduced, with 4,878 units sold in March 2026 and 4,780 units sold since April 1, 2026.”
Officials further informed that commercial LPG allocation is currently maintained at 70 percent in line with Government of India guidelines, with priority being accorded to essential sectors such as hospitals, educational institutions, defence establishments, railways, government offices, hotels, restaurants, and industrial canteens.
Expansion of the Piped Natural Gas network is being undertaken by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders in urban areas.
“Efforts are also underway to promote alternate energy sources, including the expansion of CNG dispensing facilities, which are now available at 52 retail outlets across the state.”
Providing a regional perspective, Bordoloi said the Northeast “produces around 60-70 percent of its LPG requirement through local refineries, with current production of 1,400-1,500 metric tons against a demand of approximately 2,700 metric tons per month.”
“The supply chain is supported by multiple sources and storage mechanisms, ensuring availability for 10-12 days including intrinsic stock. He emphasized that the supply situation has remained stable since early March, and urged the public not to engage in panic buying, which can strain the distribution system.”
He added that “an LPG bottling plant is being set up in Ri Bhoi and is expected to be functional by the third quarter of this year, which will further strengthen the supply infrastructure in the state.”
“Regular coordination meetings are being held among the State Government, Civil Supplies Department, and OMCs, with district-level monitoring committees actively overseeing supply and distribution. Daily stock reports are submitted to the state control room to ensure real-time monitoring.”
“To curb hoarding and illegal diversion, enforcement actions are being carried out under the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and strict action is being taken against erring distributors for violation of standard operating procedures, including digital booking and delivery authentication norms.”
The Government of Meghalaya and Oil Marketing Companies have jointly assured citizens that adequate stock of LPG and petroleum products is available and the supply chain is functioning smoothly.
Citizens have been urged to rely only on official sources of information, avoid spreading rumours, use digital platforms for LPG bookings, and practice responsible energy consumption.
