Shillong, May 6: The NPP is in the final stage of discussions on its candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha byelection, with an announcement likely after the party’s general executive meeting on May 7, Cabinet Minister and NPP state youth president Wailadmiki Shylla said on Tuesday.
“Definitely, we are like I think in the final stage of a talk, so definitely will have a candidate, so I urge our friend from press, so please bear with us just one or two day, so definitely you will get the news,” Shylla told reporters.
“Yes on 7 we are having general executive meeting and that is the plan to announce candidate,” he added.
On speculation that James Sangma’s name had come up for the Rajya Sabha seat, Shylla said discussions were still on and the final call rests with the party high command.
“Discussion is still on, so no doubt his name has come but I think it’s up to the party high command to sit and finalise on the names,” he said.
He said 4-5 names were under consideration for the Rajya Sabha nomination. “As of now there are 4-5 names which have come up which I think it’s very soon for me to share so I think because like I said it’s up to the party high command to sit and decide,” Shylla said.
“Right now I think I cannot comment on that because we have not call a meeting on that, so I think it will be soon enough before time,” he added.
Asked about regional aspirations for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, Shylla said such expectations were natural. “See different area will have their different way of thinking, so definitely I think it’s since there is a single seat of Rajya Sabha in the state, so definitely all the region would want,” he said.
“So I think it won’t be new or surprising, I think even from Jaintia Hills also would want that the MP will be from Jaintia or Khasi, that that will be there, but it is up to the party high command to decide who whom the party see fit to send to Delhi and raise our issue of the state,” Shylla said.
