Shillong, July 6: The ground report about prospects of National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Dr DRL Nonglait winning the upcoming bye-election to Shillong Lok Sabha seat is “very good”, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP national vice-president Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Monday.
During a campaign for Dr Nonglait, Dhar said the public mood was clearly in the party’s favour as the election draws closer.
“As the days pass by, the response of the people across Khasi-Jaintia is very good,” Dhar said.
He referred to more people joining the NPP, turnout in NPP meetings, and Dr Nonglait’s approach to the people, saying, “It all looks positive.”
“Hopefully, as of today, the report is very good and we will be able to win the election,” he said.
Pressed on what gave him such certainty, Dhar said the outcome mattered more than the margin of victory.
“I am not talking about the margin. Even one vote is enough. I just want to win,” he asserted.
Dhar attributed the growing support to the MDA government’s track record over the last eight years.
“The simple reason is that people are realizing that the government has done a lot of developmental work in the past eight years,” he said.
The Shillong Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the passing of sitting VPP MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.
The Election Commission is yet to announce the date for the by-election.
