Shillong, Feb 19: Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon suddenly passed away after he had collapsed while playing futsal at Mawlai Mawiong here on Thursday night.
Sources said the Voice of the People Party (VPP) was admitted to Dr HG Roberts Hospital immediately after the collapse and the doctors declared him dead around 8:45 pm.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, and other legislators and political leaders rushed to the hospital.

Leaders cutting across party lines also mourned his demise, recalling the MP’s role in raising regional issues in Parliament.
The Chief Minister expressed shock over Syngkon’s death, describing him as a committed public representative who worked tirelessly for the welfare of people.
“Deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the untimely demise of Hon’ble MP from Shillong, Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon. Dr. Ricky was a dedicated and compassionate leader, with deep enthusiasm for public service and unwavering commitment to his people. He was rooted in faith and served with humility, vision, and a sincere desire to uplift society,” the Chief Minister said in his social media post.
“My heartfelt and deepest condolences to his family, friends, and countless well-wishers during this difficult time. May he rest in peace,” he added.

Expressing his shock over the demise VPP leader and KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana said, “It is a great loss to the party and the state as a whole.”
“We received information that Dr Syngkon went to play futsal and he was immediately shifted to Mawiong CHC, from where he was referred here (at Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital). The incident took place at around 7pm. We were shocked at the sudden demise of Dr Syngkon.”
