Shillong, March 24: In what could be a major challenge for a huge section of the teaching community, the state government has announced that over 25,000 in‑service teachers have to mandatorily clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) by 31 August 2027 to comply with a Supreme Court mandate.
Referring to the Supreme Court order issued on 1 September 2025, making TET mandatory all teachers, including in‑service teachers, of elementary education, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui underlined that the order applies retrospectively.
“All teachers, since the date of appointment, who don’t have TET have to appear and pass,” he said adding that those with as little as five years left in service are included; failure to clear the exam will block promotion.
Education department has already issued a notification in this regard and enrolment for special TET sittings is under way.
“I wish all teachers should apply and pass so that if there is any future complication it will not affect them,” Rymbui said.
A notice issued by the Director of Educational Research & Training JU Kharpuri on March 18 has informed that online application for the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) will be opened from March 23 to April 9 up to 5 pm and date of the test will tentatively be held on May 29.
