Shillong, May 22: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has dismissed claims of party MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar joining the National People’s Party (NPP).
Reacting to speculations about the Mawkyrwat MLA on Friday, UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh asserted that there was no indication the legislator is leaving the party.
The speculations gained attention following several of Tongkhar’s supporters joined the NPP recently.
“Supporters are free to move from one party to another, from A to B to C. But elected members are not free to do that. They are bound by the law and have to act accordingly,” Lyngdoh told reporters.
“As of now, there is nothing to suggest that Renikton is leaving the party.”
Lyngdoh said he has been in regular touch with the Mawkyrwat MLA. “I meet him frequently. He has made it clear that he is not moving out of the party as of now.”
On the supporters’ defection, he said the UDP has asked its local unit to review the situation.
“In the UDP, we strongly believe that grassroots workers are the most important. We must consider them before any decision,” he said.
“We have asked our local leaders in Mawkyrwat to look into the matter and report back if they need any support from the party organisation.”
When asked about alleged poaching by other parties, Lyngdoh said, “That should not be encouraged at all. But ultimately, it is up to the individual member of the House to decide.”
On his own leadership, he added, “I feel good that my leadership is recognised. That pushes me to improve. A leader should listen more than he speaks. That is how you learn, stay updated, and act appropriately.”
“Inputs, feedback, suggestions — and even scrutiny — are all part of how you grow, not only as a political leader but in life,” he said.
