Bar non-tribals from KHADC polls: KHANM

Shillong, March 10: Following the GHADC notification barring non-tribals from participating in the Council elections, a demand for imposing similar restriction has once again knocked on the KHADC door.

The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to amend the District Council Rules to bar non‑tribals from contesting and voting in KHADC elections.

In a letter to KHADC chief executive member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah warned of that delay in issuing a similar order risk repeat of tension over the issue now disturbing Garo Hills.

“We have requested several executive committees since 2014, but sadly all of them have remained silent without taking the issue seriously,” Passah said.

He pointed to GHADC nominations that drew non‑Garo candidates, attributing it to “the failure of MDCs to strengthen important laws.”

The KHNAM has also submitted a draft amendment to the KHADC that would bar non-Khasi tribe persons from voting or contesting the KHADC elections.

The party suggested that “a person not belonging to a Khasi tribe shall not be entitled to vote in the KHADC election”.
