Rain, thunderstorm likely till March 19

Shillong, March 15: District authorities have issued a public advisory following a forecast by India Meteorological Department (IMD) about thunderstorm and heavy rain hitting in East Khasi Hills region from March 15 to 19.

March 15 could bring lightning, gusty winds of 40–50 km/h and hail at isolated places, with similar storms expected on subsequent days, according to an official release.

Accordingly, residents have been urged to secure loose objects, switch off electrical appliances during lightning, avoid streams and flooded roads, and stay away from electric poles.

People in low lying areas and areas near rivers and streams have been asked to take extra care during heavy rainfall as there is a likelihood of flash flood.

Citizens have also been asked not to venture into streams, rivers and waterfalls and advised to going out during hailstorm.

The citizens have been asked to “remain alert and take necessary precautions” and to dial 112 for disaster assistance.
