2 Meghalaya girls rescued from Haryana

Shillong, March 18: Two teenage girls from Meghalaya, who were pressured into prostitution after being lured to New Delhi with promises of domestic work, were rescued by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit and the Special Police Unit for North‑East Region (SPUNER).

The girls, aged 15 and 18, were taken from Delhi to a spa in Haryana where they were pressured to join prostitution work.

However, the girls managed to contact their family who alerted the KSU, which in turn informed SPUNER leading to the prompt action.

“This incident is a stark warning of the dangers our youth face when seeking jobs outside the state,” KSU Delhi Unit president Marbiang Khongwir said.

“We urge parents and young people to be cautious of job offers from unverified sources. KSU remains committed to protecting Khasi lives in Delhi‑NCR.”

The union said an acquaintance from Meghalaya working in Delhi had brought the two girls from East Jaintia Hills without parental consent.

A joint KSU‑SPUNER team located and freed them in Haryana.

The KSU thanked Sabrina of ARC Meghalaya House and Joint CP Nabam Gungte of SPUNER, and SPUNER’s rescue team — Sub‑Inspector Ngalung Wung, ASI Naveen Kumar, HC Satish Kumar and W/CT Lalrinhluni.

Counseling is being arranged and efforts are underway to reunite the girls with their families, the KSU said.
