Public rally on April 7 to seek new mining policy

We need a policy that works for us, not against us. – Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealers Association

Shillong, April 2: Amid less takers for “scientific mining” in Meghalaya, coal mine owners in the state have announced a public rally on April 7 to demand for a new mining policy keeping in view the region’s unique land tenure system and geological conditions.

“We want the state government to engage with the Centre to implement scientific mining that suits our people’s practices,” Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealers Association (JCMDA) president Borrin Shadap told reporters here on Thursday.

Shadap, meanwhile, welcomed lifting of the ban on coal mining by the Supreme Court, terming it an affirmation of the rights of landowners under the Sixth Schedule.

Association member Sambormi Lyngdoh highlighted the environmental concerns and practical challenges of open-cast mining – completely different from the banned “rat-hole” mining – in Jaintia Hills.

“Open-cast mining isn’t feasible here; we need a policy that considers our terrain and land ownership patterns,” Lyngdoh said.

At the rally, the coal mine owners would urge the state government to constitute a committee to survey land conditions and draft a policy addressing the concerns of small-time miners.

Terming the conditions laid down for “scientific mining” not feasible for small-time miners, Lyngdoh said, “We need a policy that works for us, not against us.”

The association has invited all stakeholders, including coal miners, truckers, and workers, to join the rally.

“We want to show we’re committed to responsible mining, not illegal activities,” Lyngdoh said.

“It’s time the government addressed our issues.”
