Govt nod to construct 186 LP school buildings

Shillong, April 2: Launching a major initiative to boost education infrastructure at the start of financial year 2026-27, the state government has approved construction of 186 lower primary school buildings and additional classrooms for several higher secondary schools.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui made the announcement of the project after chairing a four-hour review meeting of the department on Thursday.

Praising Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for his initiative in the project, Rymbui said, “I am very happy that the Chief Minister has sanctioned 186 school buildings for lower primary schools… also includes a few higher secondary schools in which additional classrooms are needed.”

Meanwhile, the review meeting deliberated on appointments in newly created subdivisions that include offices of sub-divisional school education officers.

“Whatever issues we could resolve, we will resolve immediately. Those needing discussion with Personnel, Finance, or the Chief Minister…we will take up,” he said.

Cabinet nod to a Meghalaya Teachers Training Academy also came up for discussion in the meeting.

Education department has notified the academy and directed its director and officers to draft an implementation plan.

“Teacher training is very important. We have impressed upon them to formulate the plan and decide how to go about it,” Rymbui said.

The minister also reviewed preparations for the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test, advertised by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training.
