Repair, renovation of LP schools record 86 pc completion

Shillong, July 6: In one of the largest school infrastructure development drives in Meghalaya, nearly 1,400 government lower primary (LP) schools across the state have been renovated under the Mission Education programme.

Altogether 1,391 LP schools have underwent renovation out of the 1,607 schools taken up for repair and renovation, recording 86 per cent completion of work under the programme, officials said.

The renovation of the remaining 216 schools is under way.

Backed by an investment of nearly Rs 1,000 crore, the statewide programme spans all 12 districts and includes the construction, renovation and upgradation of lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools.

Officials said more than 2,000 school infrastructure projects have been taken up under Mission Education.

Apart from renovating existing schools, the programme has completed 191 new or upgraded LP schools and seven upper primary schools under Phase I, while 100 LP schools were taken up under Phase II.

Another 117 LP schools are being developed under Phase III, and 186 new LP and secondary school buildings are under tendering in Phase IV.

Officials said the renovation works include repairs to roofs, walls, floors, doors and windows, along with the addition of classrooms, libraries, furniture and improved sanitation facilities. Upper primary schools have also been upgraded under the initiative.

Officials said progress is being monitored through geo-tagged, time-stamped documentation to ensure transparency and accurate tracking of works.

Describing the initiative as a phased transformation of the state’s school infrastructure, they said Mission Education is aimed at improving learning environments across Meghalaya and represents one of the largest public investments in the education sector in recent years.
