Shillong, Aug 18: Meghalaya’s first woman Chief Secretary, Rebecca Suchiang, passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment for cancer.
Suchiang was battling cancer for more than two years.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday and will be buried at Mawkhar Presbyterian Church cemetery at Lawmali. She is survived by her husband and 3 sons
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma condoled her passing in a social media post, saying Suchiang’s service to the state will be remembered.
“As the first indigenous woman Chief Secretary, Kong Rebecca made bold decisions at tough times and was respected for her leadership among her peers, her guidance to her juniors and her inspiring work ethics,” the Chief Minister said.
Sangma also recalled her determination during her prolonged illness, saying she “fought bravely” and continued to work despite her health challenges.
“Her service and dedication to the state will be remembered,” he said, while extending his deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Suchiang was the first Khasi woman to serve as Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, taking oath on September 30,2021.
She was sworn in as the State Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) on April 3,2025.
