Shillong, Aug 22: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has expressed concern over the violence during a KSU-sponsored rally in Shillong and subsequent tension along Assam-Meghalaya border.
The MPCC, in a statement on Tuesday, said the state government should have taken stronger preventive measures to maintain law and order.
Stating that the recent developments had affected public confidence and disrupted normal life, MPCC president Vincent H Pala alleged that the government had not responded with adequate preparedness despite signs of growing tension.
The MPCC also highlighted the impact of the situation on tourism and the local economy, saying cancellations had affected hotels, homestays, taxi operators, restaurants, shops and others dependent on the sector.
It further said disruptions in the movement of medicines, essential commodities and travellers had caused difficulties for patients, workers, students and commuters.
On the situation along the Meghalaya-Assam border, the MPCC said sensitive interstate issues required continuous dialogue, coordination and timely intervention by both governments.
The MPCC condemned violence, intimidation and damage to property from all sides, while maintaining that ensuring law and order remained the responsibility of the elected government.
The party urged the state government to restore public confidence, ensure the uninterrupted movement of essential commodities, provide adequate security to travellers and address interstate concerns through dialogue and coordination.
