Kohima, Jun 23: Amid growing public outrage over crimes against women and children in Nagaland, state minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse on Tuesday said authorities must step up efforts to ensure the safety of women and children.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme here, Kruse, Nagaland’s first woman minister, expressed concern over the increasing reports of sexual abuse involving women and girl children, saying such incidents have become alarmingly frequent.
“Today, we are hearing a lot of news through the papers every morning. Almost after a few days, another story comes up like that. I feel that our authorities should work harder to keep our women and children safe,” the minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, added.
Her remarks come close on the heels of the recent mass public rally in Kohima organised by the Tribal Women Bodies of Kohima and supported by various civil society organisations, where thousands of people demanded justice for victims of sexual violence and called for stronger measures to curb crimes against women and children.
The rally also urged the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure speedy investigation and prosecution of offenders, reflecting growing public concern over the rise in such cases across the state.(PTI)
