Govt to regulate construction activities in industrial zones

Cabinet okays common norms for industrial zones across state

Shillong, Nov 6: Construction of buildings in all existing and upcoming industrial zones across the state will now be governed by a common set of norms.

To facilitate this, the state cabinet on Tuesday approved amendment to the Meghalaya Building Byelaws keeping in view upcoming industrial zones at Mawhanu and Mawkasiang under New Shillong Township.

The amendment to building byelaws was necessitated to categorise the industrial zones for regulation of construction in these areas, especially to define the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) of buildings.

Underlining the need to bring the amendment, cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “Expansion happening in New Shillong has to be planned in a very scientific manner, which is why we need this new set of byelaws for the industrial zones.”

The categorisation was necessary in view of the growing urbanisation and the emergence of new urban centres, he said.

He also said the new regulation would be applicable in designated industrial estates across the state.

Lyngoh also mentioned that the areas for setting up industrial zones at Mawkhanu and Mawkasiang have already been acquired by the state government.
