Ampareen bats for more overseas jobs for youth
Shillong, Dec 9: Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has emphasised the need to address technical barriers faced by skilled workers from Meghalaya seeking overseas employment especially in Great Britain, during her meeting British high commissioner Lindy Cameron in Shillong recently.
“We interacted with her and requested her to look into some of the technical difficulties our applicants are facing. She assured us that she would attend to it, and we are likely to follow it up in New Delhi with another meeting,” said the NPP spokespersons about the interaction during the British high commissioner’s visit to Shillong.
Admitting challenges for the youth in getting overseas employment despite having potentials, she said, “A lot of manpower from the state, skilled in various fields, need to clear examinations required by those countries. Despite the fact that Meghalayans are generally fluent in English, many still struggle to clear these exams, which hinders their chances of securing jobs abroad.”
The discussion also focused on overseas job prospects in sectors like nursing and hospitality.
Meanwhile, the two women leaders discussed challenges faced by women in active politics and the barriers to their participation.
“We shared conversations on the difficulties of women playing an active role in politics. We exchanged notes, and one common realization was that laws across countries need to be enacted to help women assume political positions,” Lyngdoh said.
The minister said she had highlighted the personal challenges she had faced as a woman in the political arena, noting that even women in first-world countries encounter similar obstacles.
“The conversation gave us insight into the woes that I personally faced as a woman in competition with men, and the difficulties she faces as a woman even in a first-world country,” she shared.
