Patna, Sep 23: The RJD’s women wing on Wednesday took out a march in Patna against the alleged molestation incident in Jamui, claiming that crimes against women were on the rise in Bihar.
The march began from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) office on Veerchand Patel Road and culminated near the Income Tax crossing, where party workers also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
The protesters raised slogans and displayed placards criticising the state government and the chief minister over the alleged increase in crimes against women, including the Jamui incident.
They also demanded Choudhary’s resignation, who also holds the Home portfolio.
“Crimes against women are rising across Bihar. The Jamui molestation incident is another blot on the NDA government in the state,” RJD worker Puja Shekhar Yadav told reporters.
“The CM should immediately resign. It is shameful that some NDA leaders, including ministers, are justifying the incident by saying that such small things happen. NDA leaders are patronising criminals and mafias in the state… Even in the capital Patna, women and daughters are not safe. The insensitive CM must resign,” she said.
The Jamui incident took place on September 19 and came to light on Monday when purported video clips, apparently shot by some of the accused, surfaced on social media.
The clips purportedly showed a girl being harassed by a group of men, while her friend pleaded with them to stop.
On Tuesday, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav also demanded the CM’s resignation, alleging that law and order had completely collapsed in the state.
The RJD national working president claimed that “Bihar is being shamed” and the state was witnessing “gundaraaj”.
Meanwhile, the District Bar Association, Jamui, decided that its office-bearers and members would not represent the accused in court.
Police on Tuesday claimed to have nabbed the “two main accused” in the molestation of the girl. The two men were nabbed following an encounter in which both were injured. With this, the total number of people held in connection with the September 19 incident has reached five, including three minors. (PTI)
